What can water teach us about craft? In this generative intensive, we will explore approaches that different bodies of water offer for considering image, subtext, and syntax in our writing across genre. We will look closely at excerpts of published work in poetry and prose, and try out generative writing exercises, including (optional) embodied experiments.

This generative craft session is open to writers of any genre. Whether you seek to deepen an understanding of image, subtext, and syntax; want to explore water as method in your writing process; have a connection with a specific body of water to write into; seek tools for writing into grief over a changing climate; or are simply hoping to generate new material and set aside focused time alongside other writers to write, read, and discuss—join us!

BIO: Patrycja Humienik is the author of We Contain Landscapes (Tin House, 2025), selected as a New York Public Library Best New Poetry Book. An editor and teaching artist, Patrycja has developed writing and movement workshops for Brooklyn Poets, Arts+Literature Laboratory, The Seventh Wave, Northwest Film Forum, Henry Art Gallery, and in prisons. Her work can be found in The New Yorker, Gulf Coast, Poetry Daily, Poetry Society of America, The Slowdown Show, and elsewhere. She is working on her first novel.
