What makes a reader unable to tear themselves away from the page? Every story needs something to convert the power behind your narrative into movement and motion for the reader. Understanding how to harness this power will help you to drive your story forward.
In this generative craft intensive, we’ll study excerpts of published works to analyze and identify their engines and the craft techniques that make them compelling. We’ll explore different kinds of engines and ways to build propulsion on the page, and practice building and emphasizing our own engines through generative exercises and discussion.

BIO: Kyle Lucia Wu is the author of the novels Win Me Something (Tin House Books 2021), an NPR Best Book of the Year, and Bottle Train, forthcoming from Henry Holt in June 2027. She is an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at The New School. Kyle has received the Asian American Writers’ Workshop Margins fellowship and residencies from the Millay Arts, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center, among others.
