Thich Nhat Hahn tells us, “Everything relies on everything else in the cosmos in order to manifest—whether a star, a cloud, a flower, a tree, or you and me.” We are entirely entangled with everything around us, before us, and after us—what our families and loved ones moved through, the stories they passed around, the art we love and remember most, the fauna, flora, and fungi, the stories of a landscape, a country, a neighborhood—and so too is our work.

From poetry to prose to art, collage and hybridity have been used explore, complicate, and enhance narrative with style. From visual incorporations like photographs, illustrations, and scanned media, to textual hybrids, such as blending prose and poetry, hybridity has shown to capture the multiplicity of the writer in nuanced and exciting ways.

This craft intensive is a space to explore the possibility of entanglement, fragmentation, and reconstruction by engaging in the practice of collage to enhance our work and our understanding of the world around us. A hybrid of lecture, discussion, and guided writing, we will move through the cornerstone portals of Blood, Nature, and Place. This craft intensive invites writers across genre and form, artist and non-artists, and those looking to both generate new work and revise old work.

BIO: Giovannai Rosa is a writer, editor, and artist from Miami. A 2023 McCormack Writing Center Reading Fellow, and a 2025 Adroit Journal Djanikian Scholar, their work has been housed in Ploughshares (winner of the 2022 Emerging Writer’s Contest in Poetry), Passages North (the 2023 Elinor Benedict Poetry Prize winner), The Academy of American poets Poem-a-Day series, Oxford American, and more. As a Senior Editor of The Hopkins Review, they cureated Estuary: A Series on Poets Before the First Book. They currently teach as a Salter Lecturer in the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University. Find them at giovarosa.com
