Sadia Pineda Hameed is a Filipina Pakistani writer and artist from London, based in Wales. Her work explores latent ways to speak about collective and intergenerational trauma through inherited anticolonial strategies of dreaming, telepathic communion and secrets. Mythmaking, melodrama, decoy, unearthing and hiding become playful devices in her work to write in through a ‘delirious discourse’ where personal archives and collective experiences converge. She has been published with Poetry Wales, ZARF, Amberflora, Porridge and others; has exhibited text-based film and installation work internationally; and is a recipient of the Paul Hamlyn Award, Literature Wales New Writers Award and Rising Star Wales Writers Award. She also runs small press, radio and collective LUMIN.
Project Description: Sadia will be working on To Make Philippines, a creative nonfiction novella which uses oral history, associative and semiotic journeying, dreaming and melodrama to form a mystical memoir about her mother’s migration from the Philippines to the UK in the 1970s and, through the retelling, the uncovering of a secret sister. The novella explores postcolonial rupturing in language, land, relationships, collective trauma and mental health; and, springing from these ruptures, the covert spaces and strategies of resistance and love inherited in the diasporic body.
