Dr. Camille U. Adams is the author of the memoir, How To Be Unmothered: a Trinidadian memoir (August 2025, Restless Books). How To Be Unmothered is a 2025 Foreword Indies finalist in autobiography and memoir, a 2026 Firecracker Awards finalist in creative nonfiction, a 2023 Restless Books Prize in New Immigrant Writing finalist, an Electric Literature’s Best of 2025 Nonfiction List selection, a National Caribbean American Heritage Book Bankra selection, and a 2025 CLMP Most Celebrated book choice. Camille was also elected by Tantor Media to narrate the audiobook, whereby the distinct poetic prose can be aurally enjoyed. Camille earned her MFA in Poetry from City College CUNY and a Ph.D. in Creative Nonfiction from Florida State University. She has been awarded 2024 Best of The Net in nonfiction and has received five Pushcart Prize nominations and three Best of the Net nominations for her writing featured in literary magazines. Her creative nonfiction has also received recognition as a notable essay in Best American Essays 2022. Among Camille’s awarded fellowships is an inaugural Tin House Reading Fellowship, an inaugural Granta nature writing workshop fellowship, an inaugural Anaphora Arts Italy Writing Retreat Fellowship, a McKnight Doctoral Fellowship, a Community of Writers Fellowship, and a Roots Wounds Words Fellowship. Camille has also received support from Kenyon Writers Workshop, VONA, and others. Camille has also given back to the literary community by serving as a juried reader for Tin House for three years, as an editor and assistant editor for various literary magazines for years, and as a judge of creative writing contests. At work on new writing, Camille is happiest and most inspired when walking through the woods and when relaxing on the shores of rivers.
