Third Person Interiority, with Style with Gina María Balibrera

The third person doesn’t have to be a voice from the wild beyond–it can be intimate, embodied, and stylish. In this intensive we will practice entering the minds of our characters from an embedded third person point of view. We will take a look at the flexibility and fun of this perspective, and delight in the ways that writers like Jonas Hassen Khemiri, Marie NDiaye, Lydi Conklin, and others make third person interiority sing. We’ll also write! This is a generative workshop, but revision is generative too, so please feel free to bring something you’re working on. This workshop is open to all writers, beginning through advanced.

BIO: Gina María Balibrera is the author of the novel The Volcano Daughters. She earned an MFA in Prose from the University of Michigan’s Helen Zell Writers’ Program. She’s been awarded grants from Aspen Words, Tin House, the Rackham Institute, and the Periplus Collective, as well as a Tyson Award, the Aura Estrada Prize, and the Under the Volcano Sandra Cisneros Fellowship. Her work has appeared in the Boston Review, Pleiades, The Wandering Song: An Anthology of the Central American Diaspora, and elsewhere. Originally from San Francisco, she lives in Ann Arbor, MI, with her family.
