Feeling stuck on how to tell the story you want to tell? It might be time to disrupt your writing process and focus on playing on the page rather than perfection. In this generative workshop, we’ll read essays that experiment with form, structure, perspective, as well as speculative nonfiction that reimagines the very concept of the “personal essay.” We’ll then use tools and tactics that hinge on “disruption” — challenging ourselves to write in ways that might not be our default processes. Disrupting your writing process will force you to write in new ways, which can help you unlock new ideas and discoveries on the page.

As a full-time editor at a queer magazine that regularly publishes personal essays, I see so many essay pitches and drafts on a daily basis, and I know what sets the best work apart. Essay work and creative nonfiction can and should be just as playful and imagination-based as writing fiction, and this workshop will push you to think in wild ways as you’re crafting your own stories.

Bio: Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya is a lesbian writer of essays, short stories, and pop culture criticism living in Orlando. She is the author of the queer horror novelette Helen House and the managing editor of Autostraddle.
